Music, no matter the circumstance, is incredibly important to us all on a variety of personal, emotional, physical, and social levels. It helps us to unpack our experiences, understand what we’re feeling and why we’re feeling it, and in a lot of cases, it empowers us to deal with complex situations and move forward with pride. Connecting emotions to music is vital, and in one of the most emotionally charged situations we all have to encounter – the loss of a loved one, using music as a way to make things a bit more comfortable, a bit more relaxing, and a bit less painful, is very important.
Funerals and wakes can be confronting, and even sometimes traumatic if the settings aren’t right, however using music to remedy this is an excellent way to combat the hard times. There are many different ways to do this, and many different feelings you might want to evoke through music: celebration, nostalgia, faith, strength, happiness, or forgiveness. Here at String Musicians, we think that the soothing and powerful tones of string instruments, presented in a string quartet or other form, can be used to make sure that any funeral or wake is a calming, empowering, or grieving experience.
A wide variety of arrangements and types of music could work to ease this rather tense situation. Whether it’s something strong and robust from the baroque era, or something a bit more refined and contemporary. Maybe you would like to represent the lost with a string quartet or a sonata or something more uptempo and warm. Maybe they had a favourite song that you think would remind loved ones of their legacy, or maybe they were a spontaneous soul that would love something to be whipped up right there on the spot. Whatever it may be, we are here for you. We want to transform this into something that you can tackle with strength and unity, using the music we provide as a tool to energise your experience and the experience of your guests.
We offer a huge range of services for live classical music at your funeral proceeding or wake. From our performances as a string quartet–which are our primary focus for this setting, through to string trio, string duos, or even solo violin, cello or viola performances, we are positive that the rich harmonies of these instruments will create a mood of tranquillity, inspiration, remembrance, and celebration. We also perform as larger chamber ensembles and orchestras, depending on the size of the funeral or wake you might have in mind.
In terms of the specifics of what our funeral services might look like, most commonly, our team will be there to usher in the guests and create an inviting atmosphere for friends and family of the departed through the tones of our strings. We would traditionally perform again for when the service commences, pairing our approach or music to whatever mood you desire, and then also while the service is underway. This could be during a reflection, slideshow, treasured memory, or even eulogy from someone who was close to the person being remembered. We would continue our performance throughout the conclusion of the service, and then again to allow your guests to leave feeling uplifted and energised.
If this schedule is not what you’re looking for, don’t worry, we are flexible with the arrangements, and can even discuss the details with a funeral director to make sure the service flows as well as possible. We’re here for you and your family no matter the circumstance and will tailor our services to whatever it is that you’re seeking. We want to provide you with support, to make sure that this ceremony is the best that it can possibly be.
Seeing as we perform acoustically, we do not need any access to sound equipment or power, which makes our setup very easy and carefree; less off your mind for the day of the funeral or wake. All we would ask for is an armless chair for our musicians, some light, protection from the elements, a space to perform, and breaks and meals if the bookings are over a certain length. We would also ask that if you would like to book a pianist, the venue must provide a tuned piano so that we don’t have to bring in our own. Inquire within to find out more.
